There I was day one owner of an iPhone 3GS. I did what any respectable nerd would do browsed the app store for the less mainstream apps. I knew full well that the 3GS was special thanks to it's built in magnometer and it's ability to read electromagnetic fields short range. After 3 minutes of use of the $1 app I came to the realization that maybe I'd have enjoyed that $1 spent elsewhere. According to every setting, the wall outlets in my room are all ghosts. Did it at my girlfriend's house, same thing. It's a good toy, but without some look at it's code and HOW it distinguishes between background EM and something that is actually causing a strong disturbance, I'd withold judgement.

Agreed - but like with any tool getting a baseline (locating away from electrical outlets in this case) is always important!
